Crossover Sales Booming in US

The crossover segment enjoyed a huge sales month in April.

Light trucks, which include compact and midsize SUVs along with crossovers, accounted for 54 percent of the total U.S. deliveries last month, beating out traditional cars for the 20th straight month.

The market was led by the compact crossover segment, which grew 22 percent to 222,007 units in April while pickup trucks sold 207,452 units. Midsize cars were outpaced by crossover sales, moving 210,897 units. Revamped models such as the new Ford Edge and Nissan Murano saw sales grow over 73 percent while other models including the Chevrolet Equinox, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester saw at least 21 percent in growth.

According to data from Edmunds, compact crossovers sold after 44 days in inventory, compared to the average for compact cars, which was 78 days. On average, the new Ford Edge had a 10-day inventory turnover in April, significantly under the segment average. American automaker GM reported that it sold 77,780 crossovers in April, its highest for a single month.
